treasure finds: notions

Up until September of last year there were only two places to purchase fabric in our little town.  Plaza Sewing Center (owned locally) and Walmart.  When Jo-Ann Fabrics opened, it became clear that this little shop can't compete.  I try to go in once a week and grab something and say hi to the little ladies that work there.  Although it seems like its a trend to 'shop local', its a real thing.  Supporting small businesses, families, employees- their passions, their dreams and all their hard work- it feels good.

Don't get me wrong, I have to go to those big box stores or order online just like the next person.  And its not always realistic for me to pay the higher local prices for bulk orders, but to walk into a local shop where they know my name and actually care how I'm doing is one of the best feelings.  They appreciate us as customers, they value our dollars spent and I hope they don't go away anytime soon.

Shop local.

  3. I own one of these little family run Haberdashery stores, in the Uk. It is because of lovely people like you that we are still around. We struggle everyday to stay open for our customers. It will be my tenth year in May that we bought our little store and I still love going to work everyday. Thank you, thank you <3

  7. oooooh this looks somewhere to get lost in! There are a couple of independent fabric shops here that I love going to, they may be tiny but they can easily take all my money (I don't even sew that much!).

    Have a good weekend

  8. I love local fabric shops and I do try to support them rather than ALWAYS going online.

one little bright spot in my day is where i buy my leather. the husband & wife owner know me by name & always ask how business is going. it's lovely. :)

  9. I wish we had more local shops around that were closer to me....unfortunately the big box places are so much closer and easier to get to. I admire this post and will make more of an effort to shop local:)

  10. Oh my goodness. BLUE SEQUIN STRIPS. I need that in my life. I wish we had a fabric store locally (Wal-Mart does not count.) We just got a new artsy store in town (my town has about 9,000 people) so I'm super excited about that. Paint your own pottery, scrapbook stuff...very cool. I do agree, though, shopping locally is very important. It's nice to see people spreading the word:)

  12. I adore fabric stores - except whenever I go into one, it's option overload and I can't ever make a decision!

  13. I totally agree and there is just something special about the women (and men) that own local fabric stores, they live it and pour their life into it...it isn't just another job for them but an outlet to provide people with great fabrics.

Support local, and know when the right time is to order/go to larger stores.
