lets park it..

Yesterday when I shared my road trip with you I also mentioned that we had some big news to share.  This is the part where I clarify that I'm not pregnant -because thats what everyone assumes.

Feel free to ask yourself WTF?!  I did.  Well after ugly crying for 2 days.  Usually people do this the other way around while The Jeffersons 'moving on up' plays in the background.  Naw man.  Not us.  Somehow in less then 3 weeks we will have sold almost all of our processions and downsized to a much simpler life.

and thats it. talk to you later.

Ok Ok let me explain.  So the husband works away, a lot.  In the winter time he will be out of the country for 3-4 week tours and although I get sick to my stomach thinking about it (gah planes!!), I will more then likely be on one of the tours with him in Australia for 3wks. So we had to ask: why do I practically live in the big home that we rent, all by myself?  Makes no sense.  This way its sorta like my cute retro trailer that this hot guy (the husband) gets to visit me at every 3 wks .. when you look at it that way its a pretty good deal.

So we concocted a plan.  Well ok my husband did as I was dragged along sobbing, but then realized its actually genius.  And really stupid and scary and random and rad and all that mixed into one.  Basically my parents have a cute little farm out in the county and on that farm they have a cute little vintage air stream trailer.  Score.  So this winter I shall annoy the crap out of my mom and be there every day [enter evil laugh here].  Really the plan is that in doing this for just 6mo. (oct-mar) we will walk away practically 100% debt free and with a pretty damn nice down payment to purchase our first home.  Seems pretty swell, yeah?

Technically we don't have to live in a trailer, my parents do have room in their house.  We just want to.  We don't have kids and when else will we ever get a chance to do something like this? You might be curious about my studio and all that, well its taken care of and I have a spot ready at the old folks home.  And by old folks home I don't mean retirement center, I mean my parents house. badabing shes got jokes today people.

So there you have it.  We're selling anything and everything that has no meaning to our life, packing up the rest and when we are ready we will start over.  In a more simple and conscious way. The best part is that we will start somewhere new.  I feel surprisingly calm about it all and am pretty stoked to see what its like to not pay bills anymore, I hope I dont like it so much that I live in this thing forever. Ha. Joking.

I will totally keep up with things here so you can follow along on the ride, wish us luck!

  3. I gotta applaud what you're doing! I don't know that I could do that myself, even living in a 700sqft basement suite is too small for us haha. But it IS awesome and you're right, definitely a great way to save some money for your own home. It's awesome you can park it on their property and don't have to worry about rent at all.

I would love to tour Canada and part of the States pulling a small trailer like in the first photo. Roadtrip, woooooo! hehe.

Anyways, I wish you luck with your new random but rad decision to save some dough and try something new!!! :)

  4. this is one big clever idea! i plan to do same (well not the same but technically) for the winter as i am beating myself up everyday why on earth i got my place while my husband is away instead of staying with my father and save money.. CONGRATS!

  5. Sounds like a great idea! We have a vintage Airstream and I'll say, it's the perfect place to reside for awhile. :)

  7. dude, that is so us. I mean, we have actually been whittling down our lives and working toward being as flexible as absolutely possible. we purchased our first home two years ago - but just a very cheap mobile home on our own little lot, so that we could stay debt free and get rid of our rent payment. now we are wanting to get even more mobile, and that translates into getting rid of more stuff. coming home today from two months on the road the first thing we did was start sorting through some of our stuff and we already have some good get-rid-of piles. we've just found over time that less is really so much more in so many ways. although we do want to have an amazing house in the future (or 3), we want to maintain a minimalist lifestyle in all other aspects. (we want the homes in different countries and be able to host)

I'm excited to see how you adapt and enjoy a simpler life! we're actually considering buying something like that and renting out our trailer.

  12. Oh this will be so amazing you have no idea! We actually did this a few years back 1 month before I got pregnant and did it for 7 months.. So many people made comments like 'oh you must not be doing good, or did you lost your job?" it was silly. Really what took others years we accomplished in 7months and just in time to have the baby in our new home- where we still live today. congrats on taking a huge leap of faith, enjoy it!

    1. Meah!! I'm so glad you commented I havent chatted with you in forever and your blog is disabled =( I didn't know you did this too! We live in a small town that one of my fears was 'what will people think' and a) i shouldn't care but b) sometimes I do. For us its not about not affording things its totally the same reason you did, accomplishing a lot of payoffs and savings in a very short amount of time. I'm so nervous!!!

  13. That sounds so exciting! It's a great way to save money while paying off debt! Were 'kind of' in the same position. We chose to live somewhere to save money and for now, it's working and can't wait for the payoff! Happy Saturday!

  14. That is rad, awesome, and scary all rolled up into one! I am currently living with my in-laws and we've been able to save a ton! My husband and I made the decision to move in (also with our daughter) and fast track our savings too. It's been totally worth it!! It's hard to not worry what people are thinking, but just remember that they'll still be renting when you're owning. Can't wait to hear more about your journey! xo

  16. I was living in a place that was way too big and expensive and have recently down-sized BIG time! At first it is freaky deciding what I can/can't live without. But then you find yourself enjoying it and feeling very liberated. Plus it means you can buy new stuff later on!!

  17. Awesome girl!! Walking away debt free in 6 months is more then enough convincing for me. How awesome is that!! And living in the country side with a good working space just around the corner.....I mean....seriously. AWESOME. AAAND...Living simple and being humble...double awesome.

The only thing that would worry me is spending winter in one of those trailers.....ok...I don't really know allot about them....but wont it get cold as hell?

  18. I love everything about this. My husband tried to convince me to do this very thing right after we got married. I should have said yes. I think it will be a fun adventure, and it'll be amazing to be debt free, and have a huge chunk to put down on owning a home. I hope you love it!

  20. If I didn't have kids, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It's an adventure, and while I'm sure there will be days you hate it, in the long run you are lucky to have the option!! Plus I'm sure you will make it ridiculously charming. xo

  21. I think this is so awesome. I wish I could do something like this but I have two cats, and two dogs. Oh, and a husband ;). What a great example of how an unconventional approach can provide a huge financial leap ahead. So excited for you!

  22. What an adventure! We moved in with my parents for 6 months in between renting our apartment and buying our house. We paid off debt and saved like crazy so we could buy furniture, TV's, etc. It worked out well.

I beg Matt on a weekly basis to sell our house and buy an RV. He works from home anyway and I want to home school Bailey and just travel around the country. Ugh...a girl can dream.

  23. I think this is a RAD idea that I would totally do if I could! I know no one with a farm or a trailer and I have 4 kids. So yeah. :) We dream of having a small camper or trailer for jaunts on the weekend though - kids in a tent, naturally. ;-)

    Have so much fun!
