mani-monday: sweetheart

The January slump is officially over and I've had this strong urge to create.  I don't know what, but have you ever had that feeling that all you want to do is make something?  I think the overwhelming pink & red diy's surrounding the blog/pinterest universe might have something to do with it.  So I improvised and put that urge on my fingers, I think its a great start.

mani-monday: gel nails

Last week I was pretty sick and polishing my nails was the last thing on my mind, but on Friday I had a nail appointment so I pulled myself together (obv) and did the damn thing.  I love getting my nails done because I get to visit my old salon that I sold in late 2011 and hang out with my girls!  The salon is located downtown in the historic district on the 2nd floor of one of the oldest buildings in town.  Sometimes its still so strange to me that this isn't a place I go every day for work.

So the my nail story:  I rocked acrylics for years and it caused a tad bit too much damage to my digits.  I've tried vitamins & nail strengthening formulas, but nothing really helps these poor nails of mine.  They grow out pretty quickly, but they are so fragile and split easily- which in turn promotes nail biting on my part. Yuck!

That is where gel nails come in, now don't confuse these with gel polish.  Its totally different. Gel has the ability to take on the same characteristics as acryclics do, but without the damage, chemicals and lifting/grow out issues.  I owe a lot of how my nails look to my amazing nail artist Julia and the product she uses, which is odorless so you don't get that headache or high (unless you like that?!).  I didn't want to have chunky or long nails and told her from the get go that I would love for my nails to look as natural and manicured as possible. I love that I can paint over these no problem, my nail polish lasts longer and I can use acetone to take it off because it doesn't make it mushy like acrylics.  I get a fill on them every 2-3 weeks, and if you want to see how they look when grown out- check last weeks mani post and you can tell the edges by my cuticle just needed a little freshen up and that was at 2 1/2 wks.

If you have any questions about gel nails (how to wear them, how they are done, product used etc) leave a comment below!

mani-monday: the dark side

Today I'm excited to welcome our first co-host (with Heather & myself) to Mani-Monday.  Amy is a huge lover of polish and we knew right away when we wanted to add co-hosts that she would be on the list.  Make sure to check out her blog and say hello!  This weekend I broke the only black polish I own -after I said I was going to rock all black- so my next best bet was the OPI Nicki Minaj Metallic 4 Life and although its going to be a hassle to get off my nails, its worth it. I have a love/hate relationship with glitter polish.

There were so many great link-ups last week and I absolutely adored this Julep + Essie manicure by Emily from Anna Delores.  Simple and sweet.

mani-monday- black loves gold

This week I'm feeling a little festive and of course still loving all things gold glitter, but after using the black I think next week I will take the plunge and do them all one shade.  Maybe I will get more festive right around Christmas- but seriously the look of black polish is totally doing it for me!

Do you like to rock all black?

mani-monday: little tulips

Welcome to another edition of Mani-Monday- where we encourage you to take a little time out of your busy life for yourself by doing something as simple as polishing your nails.  This week was a little on the hectic side for me as my husband has been in Peru and surprised me by coming home a week early!  I have LOTS of my own time having him away when he is working, so when he comes home unplanned (although nice) it really throws me for a loop.  And also throws me to the nearest glass of wine to calm down.

I rocked those purple shades from last week all the way through yesterday and since I have a mani appointment tomorrow I decided to skip the polish for now.  Instead, I will get them done using a little inspiration from this adorable nail file I found at Jo-Ann's while waiting in line- damn you up-sale items!

mani-monday- purple people eater

Well Black Friday - Cyber Monday was fun!  Between orders coming in for both the shops, placing orders from all my favorite places and trying to work- I'm actually surprised I even bothered polishing my nails.  I rounded up a few of my favorite purples (although they look more burgundy/pink in the photo) and called it a good nail day.

mani-monday: mint giveaway

With the beauty industry full of choices, shades and brands it can sometimes be hard to stand out when you are one of the businesses trying to compete.  Mint is in a league of its own with amazing polish made right here in the USA featuring a toxin free ingredient list and a rainbow of beautiful colors to choose from.  I've been lucky to work with Greta and try her amazing polishes and you can catch a review by Heather over on Glitter and Gloss today, not to mention Amy of At the Pink of Perfection showed off the one coat quality that this polish claims to have. Which believe me, it amazingly does!
Mint originated after the discovery that nail polish products are still considered Hazardous Waste in counties like Los Angeles. The idea that we are coating our nails with something that we can’t safely put in the trash was dumbfounding, especially considering Proposition 65, California’s Toxic Enforcement Act. Having always been a polish junkie, Greta could never find the perfect non-toxic brand that reached bottle color within one coat and dried fast enough to accommodate her busy lifestyle. Mint is that perfect polish. She created the Mint formula to be thinner than most varnishes, allowing you to use less polish to coat every nail and also allowing the polish to dry faster than most. Even though the formula is thin, it's highly pigmented and will reach bottle color within one coat*. Mint is also 100% American made - down to their boxes and are not tested on animals!

*Unless advertised as a sheer - Bellini Babe, Ribbon Dancer.

I wanted to find out just a little more about Mint besides their amazing start up story and care for the environment.  I shot over some questions to Greta to get the scoop on her inspiration and plans for the company within the next year.

What is one of your favorite parts in running Mint?
My favorite part of having Mint is definitely the challenges and creativity that goes along with having a small business in such a fiercely competitive market. One must be innovative in order to stay afloat, and I have really enjoyed the challenge. When customer's have a positive response to the product, it hits at a personal level and makes all my hard work worth it.

Where would you like to see Mint go in the next year or so?
Right now we are focusing on retail - hopefully you will be seeing Mint products within local boutiques nationwide before year's end. We are also working on a holiday collection that will feature 1 to 2 new products, and also a larger collection to be introduced sometime in 2013.
