hey heather where have you been?

That's kind of the question I have been asking myself lately.
You all know the new change that went on with my husband and his work.
Well I think I'm finally used to it.  Only took about 3 weeks, huh?

With my new "adjustment period" I have done quite a few things that I would like to share!

So I:
-slacked on blogging-
-slacked on sponsor giveaways- sorry sponsors i owe you big time!
(oh man lots of those are coming up, so get excited)
-dealt with my laptop that crashed & almost losing lots of photos from jobs-
(still dealing with the aftermath of having to re-edit 4 weddings & 2 engagements)
-fell in love with our new dog Arthur-
-started doing more house stuff-
-cried- lots.
...................
But then... something happened.

A new revelation about my life, my businesses and where I want everything to go.
...................

Yesterday morning, while in the shower, I came up with a new plan.

(SHOWER: THE PLACE OF THOUGHTS & DECISION MAKING)

Although I love doing hair & I love taking photos.. lately both have become jobs to me.
Well, I have issues.. and I don't really like having something feel like a job.

So instead I'm following my passion, and I'm following something that can potentially be great.
No.. I'm following something that is great.

Yesterday I decided that as of August 31st I will no longer do hair.
I will also stop operating as House of James (my photography business)
and take the rest of the year off, after wedding season, to re-brand and re-evaluate.

What does this mean?
Well, it means that this is now my full time.

Making my accessories & managing this blog are it.
The pros:
Full inventory all the time
Stocking my items in shops all over the country (i have a few lined up already!)
Keeping this blog updated & sharing new items with you from others
Not being stressed about work
Not being stressed about doing things I'm not 100% confident about (photoshoots I'm not diggin')
Ending stress that might help my chances of being a mommy (!!!!)
Being home, being a better wife, friend, daughter..

The cons:
there is only one that i can see...
missing my clients and co-workers

Although I have been my own boss for quite a while now,
I have let others (my clients) decide how my business became..

So no more.  I call the shots now in every way!
So with this new adventure, I will now be able to open back up duplicates (in sept)
constantly come up with new weekly lines, while maintaining shop inventory
answering all the emails & having time to just enjoy this ride!

Wish me luck!
xoxo

  3. Wow I think that is so great, good for you! I am such a fan of your photography. But I totally feel you on things like not liking a photo shoot, and things feeling like a job.

I am happy doing things for fun and getting money for it. But I dont want it to turn into a "job" feeling like I HAVE to do it.

I am so excited for you to have your items in stores, WOW thats amazing! Seriously Go YOU!

Good Luck with everything, I am happy for you and where youre headed! :)

  8. Go you Heather! I totally agree. One of the things that made me hesitate for so long about opening a shop was the fear that it would become work instead of fun and passion. That's one of the reasons I don't fight to keep up a certain inventory or stress over trying to find new designs. My teaching comes first because that's a passion as well, and then my creations for the shop come when I'm ready. I hope one day to solidify that, but I think you really have to go with what feels right at that moment as a piece of the whole.

  14. Sounds like a great decision! I'm not a fan of my work feeling like "work", either. That's probably one reason why my "work" is always changing! :) Enjoy your season of rest and renewal in this area of your life!

    Hi Heather,

I just want to say, I totally know where you're coming from!

I just shut down my own photography business this week (though I have one wedding & three sessions left) for pretty much the same reason. After starting it up at the age of 21 and working it, plus a full time job, for 3 years..I need a life. I have saved everything as well so that I can re-open down the road if I want to, but for now I need at least a year to live!

I'm SO glad you are able to realize you need time off and are able to do so. It marks a strong person to be able to realize what's best for them and to do it!

I can't wait to see your new accessories and as always, look forward to your blog posts!
